Why we did the research
At Mail Metro Media we believe it is important to build a news brand the consumer enjoys. We have been on a premiumisation journey over the last few years, which started by changing the way editorial values content — moving away from the traditional pageview towards the golden metric, which values interactions and quality of engagement with the article over pageviews.
We then produced more immersive and engaging article formats for our readers. In 2026 we have focused on how we can improve the reader experience from an advertising perspective — investing in better formats and reducing the number of ads on the page.
Planners shouldn’t just think about buying media with the largest reach, but platforms which provide deeper and more valuable engagement with ads.
The line in the sand
Dr Karen Nelson-Field put the line in the sand for ad viewed times at 2.5 seconds. If a digital ad receives less than 2.5 seconds of active eye-gaze, the brain fails to form a reliable, long-term memory structure around it.
Her research highlights that 85% of digital ads fail to pass this threshold — meaning billions are spent on content that human brains filter out entirely.

The research provides key learnings on how to improve attention on campaigns — and the impact that changing environment, format, creative and audience targeting has on brand metrics.
